PAUSE FOR BREATH

WATCH THE SEALS IN THE BAIE DE SOMME

Did you know that the largest colony of Harbour Seals in France has decided to take up residence in the Baie de Somme (!)? David, our local boy, takes you out to meet them. Follow the leader!

WHERE TO SEE THE SEALS IN THE BAIE DE SOMME ?

the BEST PLACES TO Spot THEM IN 2018

-    Hourdel Point

-    The Baie d'Authie to the north of the Baie de Somme

 -      In the ports of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme or Le Hourdel at high tide

-     When you go out on a canoe, kayak or pirogue ride from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the ideal craft from which to see them up close without frightening them

-       With a nature guide: several associations and independent guides will take you out on a trip that is full of surprises.

OUR ADVICE FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE
---Do--- ---Don't---
  •  Keep a distance of at least 300m when watching seals so that you do not frighten the youngsters.
  • Bring the appropriate equipment to make it even better: binoculars, telescope
  • Take a guided walking tour: many nature guides a specialised in seal spotting. They will tell you all you need to know about their lives and what they eat to ensure your experience is even more incredible.
  •  Don’t feel like walking? Jump in a canoe (!) and ride the currents to observe the seals as they sunbathe on the sandbanks.
  •  Don’t forget that they are wild animals and should not be touched :)
  •  Don’t forget that they are a protected species and you may be fined if   you harm them in any way.
  • Don’t wander off in the Bay as it can be very dangerous because of the      tides. Make sure you check the tide times in advance so that you don’t get into trouble when it is rising.
  •  Waves arrive very fast. At the same pace as a galloping horse (!)
  • Don’t attempt to feed them. This is certainly not a petting zoo.
